Understand a lesson and practise teaching it

Use the original lesson, a focused question and a short rehearsal to prepare.

Before you begin

Choose the curriculum available to your account and use the teacher journey. The Empathy Curriculum has its own specialist guides and Practice room.

Step by step

  1. Select the correct curriculum and teaching context. For The Empathy Curriculum, check the level, term and week.
  2. Read the original lesson document and its Before You Teach note. Identify the learning purpose and one part you want to understand better.
  3. Choose an appropriate guide and ask a focused question. For example: “What is the purpose of this teaching move?” or “How could I introduce this activity?”
  4. Read any source reference alongside the answer. Return to the original lesson for the full teaching sequence.
  5. In the teacher Practice room, rehearse asking, describing or waiting with a fictional child. Read the feedback and consider a different way to phrase your response.
  6. Choose what you will try in the real lesson, using your knowledge of the learners and the curriculum.

Check the result

You can explain the lesson’s purpose and have rehearsed a teaching move you intend to use.

A useful check

Start with one useful question. AI guidance and practice feedback support your preparation; they are not a teaching qualification or an assessment of your real classroom.

If the result is different, check the account and school first, then contact the team with the task and error wording.
